11th International Summer School of Sedimentology
The 11th IAS Summer School will be held in the spectacular and geologically diverse landscapes of NW Wales on 4 - 12 July 2025. Applications from IAS student members are open until 30th November 2024.
Travelling back in time is not possible but studying the world-class geology of NW Wales (including GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark) is the next best thing. This course will give you access to 800 million years of sedimentary history in an active plate-tectonic context, with similarities to modern subduction zones in SE Asia, all easily accessible in only 800 km2 and covering a full range of climate zones.
From 4th - 12th July 2025 you will study various fluvial, shallow-marine, deep-marine, carbonate, and hydrothermal vent deposits, as well as sub-recent glacial landforms.
You will ‘join a ride’ with the Avalonia landmass on its journey from the southern to northern hemisphere during the Precambrian to the Last Glacial Maximum — a trip through tropical, arid, temperate and polar climate zones.
Working with your peers from around the world, you will evaluate depositional models and their external controls of sea level, tectonics and climate.
NW Wales is proactive in helping to achieve the energy transition. You will learn about the role of geology in clean energy generation (wind, tidal), nuclear power, net zero targets, and critical mineral extraction.
